Juddmonte Colt Upsets Choisir in July Cup
An attempt by Australian-bred Choisir for three straight group wins in England ran into a brick wall by the name of Oasis Dream at Newmarket Racecourse Thursday, with the Juddmonte homebred winning the Darley July Cup (Eng-I) by 1 1/2 lengths.A 3-year-old son of Green Desert -- Hope (by Dancing Brave) racing for the same owner that won America's Belmont Stakes with Empire Maker, Oasis Dream broke from post 11 and quickly went after early leader Choisir (by Danehill). With two furlongs remaining, those two engaged in a battle that ended with Oasis Dream on top. The winner completed the six furlongs over good to firm grass in final time of 1:09.94.Oasis Dream was ridden by Richard Hughes for trainer John Gosden. The victory avenged a loss to Choisir by Oasis Dream in the King's Stand Stakes (Eng-II), in which the July Cup winner finished third. The July Cup was the third win in six career starts for Oasis Dream, who last year won the Shadwell Stud Middle Park Stakes (gr. I) and was the highweighted 2-year-old colt on the English Free Handicap. Also on Newmarket's closing day card, J. R. May's Kings Point (By Fasliyev) held off the late challenge of Chester Le Street (by Horse Chestnut) to win the Weatherby's Superlative Stakes (Eng-III) for 2-year-olds.The winner, also ridden by Hughes, is trained by Richard Hannon and completed the seven furlongs on good to firm turf in 1:24.42.
