Nevisian Lad, Macadamia Victorious at Newmarket
Sheikh Mohammed's Nevisian Lad appeared to have no running room with two furlongs to go but rebounded under jockey Kieran Fallon to post a length victory over Cape Fear in the TNT July Stakes (Eng-II) at Newmarket, England on Wednesday. Byron finished third as the winner completed the six furlongs in 1:12.39.Trained by Michael Bell, the winner is a 2-year-old colt by Royal Applause -- Corndavon, by Sheikh Albadou. "I have always felt that he was a decent colt and now he has proved it," Bell said of the colt making his first start in Sheikh Mohammed's colors after being purchased at Ascot about 10 days ago. "I don't know if he will get beyond six furlongs. His sire, Royal Applause, was basically a six-furlong horse, and I remember training his dam, Corndavon, to win a couple of races when she was carrying this colt. She was a six-furlong filly..."In the co-featured Stan James Falmouth Stakes (Eng-II), Lord Vestey's Macadamia ran 1 mile in 1:38.11 to defeat Waldmark by one length. The winner, favored in the eight-horse field, is a 4-year-old daughter of Classic Cliché -- Cashew, by Sharood."We're really thrilled, she's done nothing but improve," said winning trainer James Fanshawe.
