Kay Jeffords, whose steeplechaser Lonesome Glory was a five-time champion, died July 8 in her New York City home. Jeffords, who had turned 80 two weeks ago, had suffered from Parkinson's disease.Bred by Jeffords' late husband, Walter M. Jeffords Jr., Lonesome Glory won 24 of 44 races and earned $1,325,868. Lonesome Glory was the top jumper in 1992-93, 1995, 1997, and 1999. Kay Jeffords also raced steeplechase stakes winners Strawberry Angel, Turkish Corner, and Yellowroad and maintained a racing stable up to the time of her death.A New York City native, Jeffords and her husband adored dogs--not just hunting hounds, but all breeds. They enjoyed raising Boston Terriers and Pekinese and showed them in her name.Jeffords is survived by two sons, George and John; a daughter, Sally; and stepson Walter M. Jeffords III; plus grandchildren Charlotte, Gabriella, Jofka, Julian, and Sam. Her mother-in-law was a niece of Samuel D.
