Saturday's $1.75 million Summit of Speed program at Calder Race Course will have top sprinters from coast-to-coast flying in to face a solid home defense team of speedsters in the six stakes races.
Most of the shippers are due to arrive on two Tex Sutton charter flights scheduled for Wednesday and Thursday, arriving into nearby Opa Locka Airport. The Wednesday flight originates at Ontario Airport near Santa Anita.
Six to eight California-based runners are expected to board early that morning, including Echo Eddie and Nuclear Debate for trainer Darrell Vienna, Buffythecenterfold for Mel Stute, Roll Hennessy Roll (Wesley Ward) and King Robyn (Jeff Mullins).
Next stop will be Shreveport, La. to pick up Beau's Town for trainer Cole Norman and on to Louisville, Ky. The flight may then swell to the maximum load of 18 with midwest-based horses trained by Bill Mott, Lynn Whiting, Dale Romans, Jim Divito, Steve Margolis and Randy Morse getting on board.
Thursday's shipment begins early morning in New York with a dozen or more Belmont-based runners from the stables of Mark Hennig, Todd Pletcher, Bill Mott, Scott Lake, Richard Dutrow, Jr., Dennis Manning, Tim Hills and Patrick Biancone. A final stop will be into Baltimore before flying on to Miami.
Jockeys tentatively scheduled to fly in for mounts include Jerry Bailey, Patrick Valenzuela, Alex Solis, Eibar Coa, Richard Migliore, Martin Pedroza, Mike Luzzi, Cornelio Velasquez, Joe Bravo, Marlon St. Julien, Ramon Dominguez and Tony Farina.
