Vegas Play Nearly Tilts in Maryland Juvenile Win

(from Laurel Park report)
Harry and Tom Meyerhoff's Vegas Play won an eventful running of the $75,000 Maryland Juvenile Championship for state-bred 2-year-olds Saturday at Laurel Park.

Trapped inside and behind horses a furlong from the finish under jockey Richard Monterrey, the son of Exploit bounced off the rail and angled out to the middle of the track. He took off after the horses in front of him and won going away in 1:40.94 for the mile distance over the fast main track.

The winner paid $16.40 and his winning margin was a half-length. Creve Coeur out finished post time favorite Travelin Leroy to take the place.

"I got into trouble and I just tried to do my best to make it clear and try to win the race," Monterrey said. "He did everything right. He was much the best today."

Buddy Delp trains Vegas Play. The Hall of Fame conditioner now has 3,653 career victories, ninth on the all-time list.
