The postponed annual Assembly of the Jockeys' Guild has been rescheduled for Feb. 27-28 at the Solana Marriott in Dallas.
"The new Guild leadership is working hard for its members," said John Velazquez, chairman of the organization's Interim board of directors. "We are looking forward to the meeting. It is open to all members."
The meeting had been originally scheduled for early December, but was delayed due to increasing concerns by members regarding the Guild's controversial management under Wayne Gertmenian. The dissatisfaction eventually led to the firing of Gertmenian and his management company Nov. 15 and the election of a new board of directors on an interim basis.
According to Velazquez, details regarding the meeting's agenda and other related information will be released in the near future. Some of the issues expected to be decided is the election of a permanent board and a decision on the process for hiring a permanent national manager.
The annual meeting is traditionally attended by jockey representatives from racing colonies across the United States. The last Assembly meeting was held in December 2004 and attended by approximately 65 delegates, Guild employees, and guests.
