Moon Cactus, whose classic-winning daughter Moonshell died from hemorrhaging in January at Woodpark Stud in Ireland, died a day after foaling a Singspiel
colt Feb. 5 at Sheikh Mohammed's Dalham Hall Stud near Newmarket, England.
The 19-year-old daughter Kris, out of the Mill Reef mare Lady Moon, produced four stakes winners.
Moon Cactus, who was bred in Great Britain and raced as a homebred for Sheikh Mohammed, captured three stakes, including the Black Bottle Scotch Whisky Prestige Stakes (Eng-III). She placed in the Prix de Diane Hermes (Fr-I, the French Oaks) and a pair of English group II stakes, and retired with all wins or placings from seven starts and earnings of $274,512.
In addition to Moonshell, a daughter of Sadler's Wells and winner of the 1995 Vodafone Epsom Oaks (Eng-I), Moon Cactus' six winners from her 10 foals included stakes winners Doyen, Hatha Anna, and Ocean of Storms.
Doyen, an English champion and winner of the King George VI and Elizabeth Diamond Stakes (Eng-I), and Hatha Anna are by Sadler's Wells.
