Magna Breaks Ground for Horse Bedding Manufacturing Plant

Magna Entertainment Corp. held a groundbreaking ceremony Monday for its new North American horse bedding manufacturing facility in Lumberton, North Carolina.

The facility will manufacture STREUfex, which a company release says is "an innovative, environmentally friendly horse bedding made of shredded grain straw and trace amounts of natural oils."

Magna announced that In its first year, the facility is expected to produce 5,000 tons of STREUfex horse bedding, which will be sold to racetracks, training centers, farms and horsemen along the East Coast.

"I want to applaud the efforts of the Lumberton community for making today a reality," said John Perrotta, Magna's vice president of operations. "This facility will produce a cost-effective and environmentally friendly solution to one of the major issues confronting the horse racing industry today: the treatment of animal waste and horse bedding. The enthusiasm of the citizens and leadership of this county have been overwhelming. MEC looks forward to continuing on the path of mutual benefit for this community, the environment and the horse industry."

The manufacturing facility, which will cost about $5-million to build, will include a production plant and storage and handling buildings. It is scheduled to be fully operational by December 2003.
