Spanish Sun, left, ends nine month layoff with a win.
Khalid Abdullah's homebred filly Spanish Sun seized the lead 100 yards from the wire and held off Ocean Silk by a head to win the Ribblesdale Stakes (Eng-II) at Royal Ascot Thursday.

Spanish Sun was making her first start since a debut victory at Kempton last September for trainer Sir Michael Stoute. With jockey Richard Hughes in the irons, Spanish Sun completed 1 1/2 miles in 2:31.07. Ocean Silk, who suffered a troubled trip but finished well, was two lengths in front of Mezzo Soprano for second.

Spanish Sun was bred by Abdullah's Juddmonte Farms in Kentucky. She is a 3-year-old daughter of El Prado out of the Rainbow Quest mare Shining Bright.
