Son of Runaway Groom Brings $150,000 in Final OBSC Session

Cab Driver, a Runaway Groom colt consigned by Paul Sharp, Agent was purchased by Buzz Chace, Agent for $150,000 to top the second and final session Wednesday of the Ocala Breeders' Sales Company June Sale of Two-Year-Olds in Training and Horses of Racing Age.
In the two-day sale, 249 2-year-olds sold for a total of $4,584,500, compared with 241 bringing a total of $4,569,500 in 2002. The average price was $18,412, just short of last year's record June Sale average of $18,961. The overall median was $9,500 compared with $9,700 last year and the buyback percentage was 32.1%. It was 23.7% in 2002.
For Wednesday's session, 118 2-year-olds sold for a total of $2,290,800, compared with 119 2-year-olds grossing $1,971,900 in 2002's second session. The average price was $19,414, an increase of 17.1% over the $16,571 average at last year's second session, while the median price rose to $10,000 from $9,700 in 2002. Six older horses grossed $90,700, averaging $15,117, compared with eight older horses bringing a total of $40,000 and averaging $5,000 last year. The buyback percentage was 32.5%; it was 19% a year ago.
The session topper, a bay colt, Hip No. 290, who worked three eighths in :33 4/5 at Sunday's Under Tack session, is out of stakes placed Tippecanoe Creek, by Olympio, and is a half brother to graded stakes winner Lion Tamer.
Chace was also the successful bidder on Hip No. 468, going to $140,000 for a filly by Saint Ballado out of Franziska (IRE), by Sadler's Wells. Ricky Leppala, Agent, consigned the bay filly, whose quarter in :21 2/5 was co-fastest at the distance at Sunday's Under Tack session.
The horse who worked Sunday's other best quarter in :21 2/5 also went to Chace, as he signed the ticket for Hip No. 325, paying $82,000 for a colt by El Amante out of Above the Rest, by Singular, consigned by Wavertree Stables, Inc. (Cairan Dunne), Agent.
Hip No. 482, a colt by Is It True consigned by Ricky Leppala, Agent, was sold to Peter Karches for $125,000. The chestnut colt is out of Goose Geisz, by Great Above, and is a half brother to stakes placed Paris Adventure. He worked a quarter in :21 4/5 at the Under Tack Show.
