June 14 has been marked by upset losses for some American racing’s superstars. On this date in 1952, Greentree Stable’s Tom Fool finished as the 4-5 favorite in a seven-furlong allowance test at Arlington.
The date was particularly unkind to the great gelding John Henry. On June 14, 1980, John Henry finished second beatn a nose, in the Bowling Green Handicap at Belmont Park. On the same day the following year, Dotsam Stable’s game runner ventured west where he was upset at 6-5 odds in the Hollywood Gold Cup.
