Friday the 13th Young Thornton's Lucky Day

Friday the 13th proved to be lucky for apprentice jockey Tim Thornton who scored the first win of his career in the fourth race at Arlington Park aboard David Campbell's Saturday Sin.

Thornton, 16, from Lake Charles, La., began accepting mounts June 1 and recorded the inaugural victory with his 11th career ride. Earlier in the day Friday, Thornton finished second astride Rahyinsky in the second race.

Sent to the lead, Saturday Sin drifted to the outside on the turn and was passed by Ricardo Sioux at the top of the stretch, but was able to overtake that rival inside the final furlong en route to a three-length victory. The winner was clocked in 1:25.72 for seven furlongs over a fast track.

Thornton received the traditional bucket-of-water dousing from his fellow riders as he made his way back to the jockeys' quarters.

Dispatched at odds of more than 30-1, Saturday Sin paid $62.40, $25.20 and $12.60.
