Sandra Duke's Dreamsandvisions captured the $150,000 Evangeline Mile in come-from-behind fashion Saturday night at Opelousas, La.
Ridden by Luis Quinonez for trainer Steven Duke, Dreamsandvisions trailed the field for more than half of the race before advancing into contention coming off the final turn and finding room along the inside at the furlong pole. The 6-1 shot accelerated from between horses near the sixteenth pole en route to a one-length victory in a time of 1:38 3/5 on a track labeled fast.
Biloxi Pride, the longest shot in the field at odds of 53-1, also staged a late rally to earn the runner-up spot under jockey Michael Wright. Stockholder, the race favorite at 2-1, tracked the early pacesetters and reached the front at the top of the stretch but couldn't hold off the top two finishers in the final furlong.
Mauk Four, making his first start of the year, checked in fourth after dueling for the early lead through solid fractions of :23 3/5, :46 2/5, and 1:11 2/5. Biloxi Breeze was fifth, followed by second choice Watchem Smokey, High Strike Zone (the 121-pound top weight), and Salic Law.
Dreamsandvisions, who earned $90,000 for the victory, has now won seven of 17 starts and more than $300,000. The Evangeline Mile made it back-to-back stakes wins for the 4-year-old Kipling gelding and the chestnut's fourth overall, all coming at different racetracks. Out of the Dr. Adagio mare Nurse Linda K, Luther Wicker bred Dreamsandvisions in Texas.
The winner paid $15, $8 and $4.40. Biloxi Pride returned $30.20 and $6.40. Stockholder was $3.40 to show.
