Ipe Tombe Among 76 Nominated to Beverly D.

A total of 76 fillies and mares have been nominated to the Aug. 16 Beverly D. (gr. I), a part of Arlington Park's Arlington Million weekend.
Among those nominated is Ipe Tombe, the South African champion who defeated males in the Dubai Duty Free (UAE-I). The filly is in training with Elliott Walden at Churchill Downs. Also nomianted is Golden Apples, who won the 1 3/16-mile grass race last year.
Now owned by Team Valor, WinStar Farm & Sunmark Partners, Ipe Tombe has not yet started in the United States. Her last trip to the post was her three-length winning effort in the Dubai Duty Free on Dubai World Cup Day.
Ipe Tombe, a phrase in Zulu which translates to "where are the girls," has now won her last seven straight, with three Dubai wins added to four straight in South Africa.
Irish-bred Golden Apples, owned by Gary Tanaka, has not started this season but concluded her 2002 campaign when second by a head in Hollywood's grade I Matriarch.
Godolphin Racing Hi Dubai, a British-bred sophomore filly who was second by a length in her last start in the group I Prix Saint-Alary at Longchamp May 18, is another prominent international nominee to the 2003 Beverly D.
