Casa De Caballos' Beautiful Bets made a strong rally from the middle of the pack to win the $128,500 Turfway Breeders' Cup (gr. III) by a neck over the fast closing La Reason Saturday on the all-weather track.
The 6-year-old gray mare, sent off at odds of 15-1, covered the 1 1/16 mile course in a Polytrack record 1:42.79 with Willie Martinez in the irons.
Beautiful Bets ($33.20, $11.40, $5.80) caught front-running Slew Peg mid-stretch and then held off the rally of La Reason ($4.80, $3.40), who finished three-quarters of a length in front of Slew Peg ($4.60), who started from the outside post in the field of ten fillies and mares. Splendid Blended, the 7-5 favorite finished a distant fourth.
"I've ridden her before, and she is a different horse now," said Martinez. "She is much more mature and settled."
Trained by Glen Wismer, Beautiful Bets ran third in the Seaway Stakes (gr. III) in her last start at Woodbine, which also has a Polytrack surface. The daughter of Breeders' Cup Classic (gr. I) winner Alphabet Soup
earned $62,000 won for the seventh win in 44 starts and has now banked over $400,000 in her career.
Splendid Blended made a three-wide bid for the lead turning into the stretch but tired.
Sister Star, Prospective Saint, Victoire Bataille, Darluna, Pentelicus Dance (ECU), and Tappin for Gold completed the order.
