Flatbird Stable's Shawklit Mint surprised her two opponents in Sunday's $136,500 Vagrancy Handicap (gr. III) at muddy Belmont Park with a front-running 1 3/4-length victory, the 4-year-old filly's fourth straight win this year.
The field of eight was reduced to a trio by the muddy conditions. Shawklit Mint, a daughter of Air Forbes Won, completed the 6 1/2-furlong Vagrancy in 1:15 1/5.
Ridden by Richard Migliore for trainer Patrick Reynolds and carrying 115 pounds, Shawklit Mint jumped away quickly to establish a two-length lead while going :22 4/5 and :45 4/5 for the opening half-mile. She responded when roused in the stretch and maintained a clear advantage to the wire over 3-5 favorite Shine Again, who finished gamely on the outside for jockey Jean-Luc Samyn after trailing into the turn. Gold Mover, ridden by Jerry Bailey, gave way in the stretch, losing by five lengths.
"Speed is her advantage," said Reynolds. "We figured that in a small field, she might get lucky and run third. She is so good right now, she just topped it all off. I'm really proud of her. She got a break in the weights (six pounds), which didn't hurt."
Migliore added, "The way she ran today, nobody was going to beat her. She was the best horse. She really ran her shoes off today."
Shawklit Mint earned $90,000 for her first graded stakes victory. Overall, she has 10 wins in 23 starts and a bankroll of $455,173.
Treasure Hill Farm, Inc. in New York bred Shawklit Mint, who is from Shawklit Delight, by Pine Bluff.
The 4-1 longshot returned $10.60 to win. There was no place or show wagering.
