Timboroa Wins Burke Handicap; Dead-Heat for Second

Edmund A. Gann's Timboroa upset the $141,650 Carleton F. Burke Handicap (gr. IIIT) Sunday at Oak Tree at Santa Anita, completing the 1 1/2 miles in 2:29.91 over firm turf. Kerrygold and Res Judicata finished on even terms for second place, both 2 1/2 lengths behind the winner.

Timboroa's trainer Bobby Frankel was at Churchill Downs to saddle Kentucky Derby (gr. I) and Belmont Stakes (gr. I) runner-up Aptitude in an allowance race. Victor Espinoza, originally scheduled to ride Timboroa, rode Aptitude to victory in the 1 1/4 mile race. David Flores was originally named to ride Mash One, who scratched, allowing Flores to pick up the mount on Timboroa.

"What a great horse to pick up at the last minute," said Flores. "I had so much horse underneath me, and I mean the whole way around the course. I knew all I had to do was just wait, keep my position, and then push the button. Finally, when we got to the three-eighths pole, I saw a little hole and put him into position."

Keemon finished fourth, followed by favorite Northern Quest, Perssonet, Alvo Certo, Clure, and Single Empire.

Timboroa returned $20.20, $7.80 and $5.80. Kerrygold paid $5 and $5.60 and Res Judicata $7.60 and $10.20. The $1 exacta completed by Kerrygold was worth $31.90; the exacta completed by Res Judicata paid $92.60.

Timboroa raced in North America for the first time in September, finishing sixth in the Man o'War (gr. IT). The 4-year-old colt followed that with a 10th-place finish in the Turf Classic Invitational Handicap (gr. IT), won by John's Call. Timboroa earned $84,990 for his first win since May which improves his career record to eight wins from 16 starts. Timboroa (Salse--Kisumu, by Damister) was bred in Great Britain by Angmering Park Stud. (Chart, Equibase)
