Black Mackee, who sired 39 stakes winners, died at age 27 the end of May at Shea D Rae Ranch near Edmond, Okla., from complications caused by colic. The son of Captain Courageous was moved from Montana to the Sooner State several months after the death of his former owner, Robert F. Stuart, in January of 2000. Shea D Rae is run by the Stuart's son, Clinton, and the latter's wife and son. Robert Stuart had stood Black Mackee at his Skylark Ranch near Arlee, Mont.
Black Mackee not only chalked up an impressive number of stakes winners, but ranked eighth nationally by lifetime percentage of stakes winners from foals through 2002. His 39 stakes winners worked out to 12.5% from foals (among stallions with 200 or more named offspring).
Black Mackee, who was produced from the Six Fifteen mare Extenuate, first experienced fame in his native Washington. Bred by Mrs. Ruth M. Crownover and campaigned by Mr. and Mrs. M.L. McDonald, Black Mackee won seven of 10 races, including five stakes, as a 2-year-old in 1978. He did not race as a 3-year-old because of an injury, but found time to cover some mares. One of his offspring from that crop, Miss Mackee, won or placed in 26 stakes.
Black Mackee was returned to training as a 4-year-old, but captured only one of 11 starts. Robert Stuart bought him following his retirement from racing, during which the horse had won eight of 21 starts and earned $64,663.
Black Mackee covered only one mare this year. The mare did not get in foal, and it was decided to pension him.
