Calder-based jockey Rosemary Homeister Jr. will receive the "Babe Didrickson Zaharias Award" from Delta Psi Kappa and The Sports Society at a June 2 dinner in Miami. The group's aim is to promote girls' and women's athletics. The award is presented annually to an outstanding professional or amateur athlete... Ten college students from Kentucky and Indiana were the lucky recipients $1,000 scholarships awarded Sunday (June 1) by the Kentucky Thoroughbred Association and Churchill Downs. The 10 students -- eight of whom attend colleges or universities in Kentucky and two who are enrolled at Indiana schools -- received the scholarships through random drawings on the annual Kentucky Thoroughbred Association Scholarship Day. Nine of the scholarship winners were chosen from the pool of registered students and the 10th scholarship was reserved for a student employed in the Kentucky Thoroughbred industry or from the family of an industry employee. Students were required to be present to win. A total of 368 students registered for the drawing. The total included 37 students who registered for the final industry-related drawing. The winners of the $1,000 scholarships from the KTA and Churchill Downs were: April Arnold, Sullivan University; Matthew Eaton, University of Kentucky; David Funk, University of Louisville; Beth Grammer, Bellarmine University; Jesse Hronkin, University of Louisville - Dental School; Zhaleh Khosnowshahi, Jefferson Community College; Lauren Sheehan, Hanover College; Alan Sword, Ball State; and Theresa Yane, University of Kentucky - College of Pharmacy. The Thoroughbred industry scholarship went to Nicole Rodman, who attends Bellarmine University. ...The Meadowlands will offer a 28-date Thoroughbred meet in 2003, opening on Oct. 2 and concluding Nov. 8. Racing will take place on Tuesday afternoons (1:10 p.m. post) and Wednesday through Saturday (7:30 p.m. post). The New Jersey Sports & Exposition Authority's tracks of the Meadowlands and Monmouth Park will offer a combined 120 dates in 2003. Monmouth opened its 2003 season on May 24, continuing through Sept. 28.
