The equine abortion rate in Kentucky continued its significant decline from a year ago, based on figures released Monday by the University of Kentucky's Livestock Disease Diagnostic Center (LDDC). During final week of May, only one equine fetus was submitted to the LDDC for examination compared to 11 in 2002. The LDDC has received a total of 423 fetuses in 2003 compared to 805 last year.
The LDDC is monitoring the numbers of fetuses submitted in because of problems in recent years with mare reproductive loss syndrome (MRLS).
