Straight Line seeks back-to-back stakes win Saturday in the $50,000 Forego Stakes at Turfway Park, but the competition promises to be stiff.
Twice a grade III winner at Churchill Downs, Straight Line also has two wins on Polytrack, one the Holiday Cheer Stakes at Turfway in December and the other a strong optional allowance at Keeneland last fall. He can win on the lead or will come from off the pace but would appreciate a clean trip. With Eclipse Award winner Julien Leparoux in the irons, Straight Line should get what he needs. Harvey Vanier trains.
Seven line up in opposition for the 6 1/2-furlong Forego. Leading them is Will He Shine, a lightly raced 5-year-old from the barn of trainer Dale Romans. Will He Shine has four wins in seven career starts and has never missed the money. In his most recent race, the Gravesend (gr. III) at Aqueduct, he was beaten just a length to finish third behind grade I winner Bishop Court Hill. Since then Will He Shine has posted two bullet works at Churchill's Trackside training center. He gets the benefit of leading rider Miguel Mena in his Polytrack debut.
Six-year-old Yucatan won the Forego last year and since then has raced almost exclusively -- and competitively -- in stakes company. In 14 starts last year he won four times, including three stakes on turf or dirt, and was second or third seven times. Rafael Mojica Jr. rides for trainer Leroy Simon.
Rebecca Maker sends Buddy Got Even for his first stakes appearance with apprentice Alonso Quinonez to ride. Buddy Got Even was two-for-four last year and won his only start this year, each time with a long late run. He has three Polytrack wins, two at Keeneland and one at Turfway, and has been in the money in five of seven career starts.
The 10-year-old gelding Twilight Road, a multiple graded stakes winner to be ridden by Phil Teator, helps make this an interesting event.
Eyeforglory, five-for-nine at Turfway and a winner last out, has Bill Troilo in the saddle.
