(Edited press release) Gateway Community and Technical College and Turfway Park announced the release of their first annual commemorative poster specially designed for the March 24 Lane's End Stakes (gr. II), the track's Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (gr. I) prep race.
The poster was produced in competition among the graphic design students of Toni Bloom, assistant professor of visual communications at Gateway's Highland Heights campus. The inaugural winning design was produced by 58-year-old Bill Fox, a freelance illustrator who enrolled at Gateway to study the computer design technologies that revolutionized his industry.
The full-color poster will be unveiled at a reception at Turfway Park Feb. 23. Copies will be for sale that night and at all festivities associated with the Lane's End Stakes. A framed copy signed by the artist will be auctioned the day of the race at the track's Maker's Mark VIP Tent. A limited number of signed posters will be available for sale on the day of the race. Proceeds from sales of the poster benefit the Gateway Community and Technical College Foundation.
“We are very grateful to Turfway Park for giving our students a tremendous opportunity to showcase their talent,” said Dr. G. Edward Hughes, Gateway president and chief executive officer. “Donating poster-sale proceeds to the Foundation is equally generous. It enables the students to use their abilities to support the school, because we will use the money for scholarships or equipment in the visual communications program.”
"Turfway Park is pleased to partner with Gateway to provide a real-world challenge for its students, and we could not be happier with the results of the competition," said Turfway Park president Robert Elliston, who headed the judging committee. "As the project continues and gains momentum, we expect the community will come to anticipate the release of each year's Lane's End Stakes poster."
Printing of the posters was provided by Bramkamp Printing of Cincinnati.
