Gary Contessa added to his already huge lead in Aqueduct’s trainer standings Friday afternoon, saddling four winners from seven starters.
Although Aqueduct’s inner track was sloppy/sealed after a relentless overnight rain, the clouds broke by early afternoon and the track was upgraded to good by post time for the seventh race.
Contessa swept the early Daily Double with Three in the Bag ($3.20) in the first and Gerald’s D J ($8.30) in the second for a $2 double worth $.13.80, then won the sixth with Quick Comeback ($6.40) and dead-heated with Pay Attention when Log Jam ($3.50) rallied in the eighth race.
Jockey Ramon Dominguez, who returned earlier this week after suffering a knee injury in a spill on Feb. 1, rode four winners on the day, three for Contessa and seventh-race winner Blue Water Cruise ($6.60) for trainer Dominic Galluscio. Leading jockey Eibar Coa rode Gerald’s D J in the second for Contessa.
Contessa won the inner track season title last year with 61 wins; he now leads second-place Bruce Levine 60-27 in the standings.
Despite his injury-related absence, Dominguez now trails Coa 80-72 in the jockey standings.
