"(The bruise) turned up on Sunday morning," Becerra said. "It wasn't that bad; he wasn't really sore on it. I worked on it for a day or so and it had improved, but Mr. Fulton said to go ahead and scratch him and look for another spot. That's what good owners do and it was a good decision because now (Roll Hennessy Roll) is back to 100 percent."
Roll Hennessy Roll last raced on April 6 when second, beaten 2 ¼ lengths, to Posse in the Lafayette Stakes (gr. III) at Keeneland. He is winless in two starts as a 3-year-old. He won last year's Los Ninos Stakes and Ruidoso Thoroughbred Futurity at Ruidoso Downs before capturing the Hollywood Prevue Stakes (gr. III) at Hollywood Park in November. The Kentucky-bred son of Hennessy and the Rollin On Over mare Roll Over Baby has earned $172,029 from a record of 8-4-1-1.
"I think he'll work Saturday or Sunday and then I'll make a final decision," Becerra said. "He didn't miss any serious training and he's fit and doing great, but I just want to make sure."
Becerra said he hasn't decided on who would ride Roll Hennessy Roll if the colt makes the Riva Ridge.
Another Laz Barrera scratch, Irv and Marjorie Cowan's Ministers Wild Cat, did not make the race because he wasn't "100 percent," trainer Neil Drysdale said. The son of Deputy Minister and the champion race mare Hollywood Wildcat finished fifth after a troubled trip in the April 19 Coolmore Lexington Stakes (gr. II) at Keeneland in his last start.
"He got smashed around a lot in his race in Kentucky," Drysdale said. "He's fine, but I decided it was best for him to give him more time. I don't know where he'll run next. He's still in training and he's fine, but he needs more time."
Ministers Wild Cat won the Golden State Mile and finished second in the El Camino Real Derby (gr. III) before the Lexington. He's banked $122,960 from a line that reads 5-2-2-0.
