Crafty Prospector, whose progeny earnings total $88 million, has been pensioned at Fred Seitz's Brookdale Farm near Versailles, Ky. The 28-year-old son of Mr. Prospector has sired 89 stakes winners.
"Although in excellent health, the time has come to retire Crafty Prospector from breeding," said Seitz, the syndicate manager. "We at Brookdale are all grateful to have had this wonderful horse since 1991 and are appreciative of the long-standing support of Jimmy Iselin, Foxfield, Rob Whiteley, and all the shareholders and mare owners who have bred to him and supported him through the years.
"Although his retirement comes with sadness, we are all happy that the horse maintains such good health and vigor and can hopefully look forward to a long, contented retirement”.
Crafty Prospector, who was trained by Iselin, is the sire of Japanese champion Agnes Digital, grade I winner Devious Course, millionaire Crafty Shaw, and other graded stakes winners such as Crafty Friend, Miss Golden Circle, Crafty C. T., and Robyn Dancer. The last two placed in the Breeders' Cup Sprint (gr. I).
As a racehorse, Crafty Prospector won or placed in all 10 races, with seven of them wins. He ran second to champion filly Christmas Past in the 1983 Gulfstream Park Handicap (gr. I). He earned $116,955.
Crafty Prospector, who is out of the In Reality mare Real Crafty Lady, covered 33 mares last year. He stood at Happy Valley Farm near Ocala, Fla., the early part of his career.
