With jockey Jose Santos aboard, Breeders' Cup Classic (gr. I) winner Volponi breezed six furlongs over Belmont's main track in 1:13 2/5 Wednesday morning.

Owned by Amherst Stable and trained by Hall of Famer Phil Johnson, Volponi is scheduled to make his second start of the season in Belmont's $250,000 Brooklyn Handicap (gr. II) at nine furlongs on June 14.

NYRA clockers caught the son of Cryptoclearance in fractions of :24 1/5 and :49. He galloped out seven furlongs in 1:26 2/5.

"He felt great," said Santos, who got a nice surprise after he pulled the horse up. "I looked over on the backstretch and Funny Cide was standing right next to us. It was great; my two big horses right next to each other."

In his first start since his upset win in the Classic, Volponi finished a neck behind Speightstown in a Belmont Park allowance race on May 9. Speightstown returned from that race to finish a gallant second in Monday's Jaipur after dueling for the lead.

"He got a lot out of his comeback race," Santos said of Volponi.
