Latest Equine Abortion Figures In Kentucky Down From Last Year

The downward trend of equine abortions in Kentucky continued during the third week of May, based on figures released Monday by the University of Kentucky's Livestock Disease Diagnostic Center (LDDC) in Lexington.

Six aborted fetuses were submitted to the LDDC for examination compared to 35 submitted during the same time period last year. Two of the six were early fetal losses. The cumulative total for 2003 was 422, compared to 794 in 2002.

The LDDC is tracking the number of equine abortions in an effort to detect outbreaks of mare reproductive loss syndrome (MRLS). The disease was a major problem in Central Kentucky two years ago, and there was evidence of more cases in 2002. This year has been quiet in comparison.
