With all reserved seats sold out for Belmont Stakes Day, two seats in the clubhouse, originally worth $80, are currently for sale on eBay for $530 and climbing. There are still four days left before the bidding closes. That will just be the tip of the iceberg as New York's "Funny Frenzy" builds to a feverish pitch.
You can also bid on a $2 win ticket on Funny Cide from the Kentucky Derby at a current price of $108.50.
Media credentials also should near record numbers, with national papers like the Denver Post
and the Kansas City Star
, who normally do not cover the Belmont unless there is a Triple Crown attempt, requesting credentials. "The big difference is going to come from the newspapers and TV stations in New York State and the New York metropolitan area," said NYRA publicity director Glen Mathes. The Albany Times-Union
, which normally requests two credentials, has put in for four this year."
As an example of the local media coverage, Monday's New York Post
had six stories on Funny Cide, including a full page on Page 3. The gelding also will be a guest "columnist" for the paper over the next three weeks.
On Tuesday, Gallagher's Steak House will host a Belmont Stakes luncheon, celebrating Funny Cide's victory in the Kentucky Derby and Preakness. Those expected to attend are Funny Cide's trainer Barclay Tagg, assistant trainer Robin Smullen, jockey Jose Santos, and managing partner of Sackatoga Stable, Jack Knowlton.
