Dublino, a leading contender for the $350,000-added Gamely Breeders' Cup Handicap (gr. IT) May 26, drilled five furlongs in 1:01.80 on the Hollywood Park turf Sunday.
"She worked like a monster," said Jose Valdivia Jr., pinch-hitting for regular rider Kent Desormeaux, who will fly in from a stay in Japan for the Memorial Day race. "She couldn't be doing better."
The Gamely is contested at nine furlongs.
Jeff Ford, assistant to trainer Laura de Seroux, described the drill as "good, very good." A 4-year-old filly with three victories in six starts, Dublino comes off a triumph in the Wilshire Handicap here April 27. De Seroux won the Gamely last year with Astra.
Damaschino, an Australian import who finished fourth in the Wilshire in her United States debut, worked a mile on turf in 1:41 for the Gamely under Corey Nakatani. "She just cruised," said trainer Neil Drysdale of the 5-year-old mare.
Dublino and Damaschino are expected to face a trio of stakes winners from the Bobby Frankel stable – Tates Creek, Megahertz and Miss Terrible – as well as Dress To Thrill, winner of the Matriarch Stakes here in December. Dress To Thrill, transferred to the Christophe Clement stable by Irish trainer Dermot Weld after the Matriarch, is scheduled to be flown here from New York on Friday for her 2003 bow, Clement informed the racing office.
Frankel, the leader in Gamely winners with five, said he plans to start the talented triumvirate of Tates Creek (Patrick Valenzuela), Megahertz (Alex Solis) and Miss Terrible (David Flores).
Argentine champion Miss Terrible will make her United States debut with impeccable credentials: eight victories in nine starts, including the last seven, all Group I races.
Racing secretary Martin Panza Sunday assigned co-highweight of 122 pounds to Dress To Thrill and Dublino. Weights for other probable starters are: Megahertz 118, Miss Terrible 117, and Damaschino 115. Tates Creek still needs to be supplemented for $10,000.
Nominees also weighted but not expected to start: Starrer 120, Turtle Bow 120, Voodoo Dancer 120, Noches de Rosa 116, Crazy Ensign 115, Alexine 114, Garden In The Rain 114, Little Treasure 114, Magic Mission 114, Arabic Song 113, Sentimental Value 113, Melody Blue 112, Notting Hill 112, and Java 108.
