Trainer Robert Tiller's Winter Garden is the morning line favorite for Monday's $277,750 Selene Stakes (Can-I) at Woodbine, a 1 1/16-mile event for 3-year-old fillies.
Winter Garden, pegged at pre-race odds of 3-1, comes into the Selene on a two-race win streak, including a strong 3 ¼-length score at six furlongs on May 2 at the Toronto oval. The daughter of Roy, who has four wins from five lifetime starts, began her 2003 campaign with a gutsy victory at odds of 12-1 in the Star Shoot Stakes.
With $202,822 in earnings, the bay has been a force in her young career, the only blemish on her record coming in her final race of 2002, a fifth-place finish as the favorite in the Glorious Song Stakes.
Regular rider Chantal Sutherland once again gets the call. Winter Garden gets her first test around two turns in the Selene.
"She can act up a little bit at times, but once she gets out on the track, she calms down and is all business," said Sutherland. "She's improving with every race."
Seeking the Ring, a daughter of Seeking The Gold, is currently listed as the 4-1 second choice, a lightly-raced Ontario-bred coming off a strong four-length score at Keeneland on April 25, in her second lifetime start.
The Sam-Son Farm color-bearer began her racing career in April, finishing second at Keeneland in a seven-furlong test. Todd Kabel, with a Woodbine colony-best four stakes wins as of May 17, gets the call.
Theology, who runs for trainer James Harold Bond, is the morning line third choice at odds of 9-2. The daughter of Skip Away began her career in fine fashion, a 2 ¼-length winner at odds of 18-1 at Gulfstream Park on March 9.
The Virginia-bred followed up her debut score with a second-place effort as the favorite at Keeneland on April 9. U.S.-based rider Eibar Coa will be in the irons.$277,750 Selene Stakes (Can-I), 3-year-old fillies, 1 1/6 mile
