Suffolk Adds Three Stakes to MassCap Undercard

Suffolk Downs has announced the addition of the Sept. 22 James Moseley Sprint Handicap and a pair of $45,000 stakes races to the Massachusetts Handicap (gr. II) undercard.

The return of the $500,000 MassCap at 1 1/8 miles had been announced June 13.

The Moseley Sprint, originally known as the Suffolk Downs Sprint Handicap when it was first run in 1981, was renamed in 1999 in honor of the man who led the reopening of Suffolk Downs in 1992 and the return of the MassCap in 1995.

Neither the MassCap nor the Moseley Sprint, a six-furlong race for 3-year-olds and up, was held the past two years in an effort to maintain adequate purse levels for local horsemen over the course of an entire meet.

"We are delighted to bring back this race in conjunction with the MassCap and preserve the memory of Jim Moseley, who was instrumental in the revival of both Suffolk Downs itself and the MassCap," said chief operating officer Chip Tuttle. "No one was more committed to Suffolk Downs than he was."

Two additional $45,000 stakes, the Collegian (3-year-olds, six furlongs) and the Waquoit (3-year-olds & up, one mile and 70 yards), will accompany the MassCap and the Moseley Sprint in an all-stakes Pick Four.

"As part of our ongoing commitment to revitalizing racing at Suffolk Downs, we want to offer our fans the highest quality of racing possible on MassCap Day," said Tuttle. "The addition of these stakes races will bring an extra level of excitement to our signature day."

The 65th running of the MassCap will carry a guaranteed total purse of $500,000.  The guaranteed winner's share is $300,000, with a pair of bonus opportunities. An additional $200,000 will be awarded to the winner if the horse won multiple grade or group I stakes at a mile or longer in 2007.

An additional $100,000 will be awarded to the winner if the horse won a graded stakes race at a mile or longer in 2007. With the bonus, the total winner's share of $500,000 to a multiple grade or group I winner would be the largest of any classic division race for older horses from Aug. 20 until the Breeders' Cup Classic - Powered by Dodge (gr. I) Oct. 27.
