Rainmaker Filly Tops Fasig-Tipton Texas First Session

A filly purchased last November for $2,500 was sold for $77,000 as the top-priced offering during the Aug. 27 first day of the Fasig-Tipton Texas summer yearling sale at Lone Star Park in Grand Prairie.

The session-topper, from the first crop sired by Rainmaker, was purchased by Leprechaun Racing from the consignment of Judy Curry’s JLC Horses. Bred in Kentucky by Kathleen Schonefeld and Joey Schonefeld, the filly was purchased by JLC Horses for $2,500 at the 2006 Keeneland November breeding stock sale. The filly’s sire is an unraced son of Storm Cat who stood for $2,000 in 2005, when this year’s crop of yearlings was conceived. Rainmaker stands at All Star Thoroughbreds in Sulphur, La.The filly was produced from the winning Tabasco Cat mare Namora.

Leprechaun also bought the session’s second-highest priced horse, going to $70,000 for a Trust N Luck filly. Bred in Kentucky by her consignor, 4M Ranch, agent, the filly was produced from the winning Greinton mare Infinitely Better and is a half-sister to stakes winner Lovewithoutend. All Knowing, the unraced 2-year-old by Holy Bull out of Infinitely Better, was purchased by Gary Broad for $260,000 earlier this year at the Barretts Equine May sale.

Also during the first session, a yearling half-brother to Saratoga Special (gr. II) winner Kodiak Kowboy was bought back for $29,000. The colt by Golden Missile was consigned by agent Brad Dawkins.

Fasig-Tipton Texas reported 121 yearlings sold for a total of $1,331,600, compared with 138 yearlings sold for $1,664,100 during last year’s first session. The average price of $11,005 was down 8.7% from the $12,059 average last year, but the median price rose 16% to $6,500 from $5,600 last year. The 77 horses that went unsold represented 38.8% of the total through the ring.
