Ryan Foglesonger, the leading rider at Pimlico who is schedule to ride Cherokee's Boy in Saturday's Preakness Stakes (gr. I), took off his mounts Friday after injuring his hand in a starting gate mishap late Thursday.
Foglesonger's mount in Thursday's Miss Preakness Stakes, Pompamento, was fractious in the gate, hitting the jockey's hand against the gate prior to the start.
"I didn't even think about it (the injury) until we got going. Then I realized I must have banged it in the gate," Fogelsonger said.
His right hand was swollen and had a slight abrasion. The hand was X-rayed Friday morning at Howard County Hospital, revealing a deep bruise.
The rider made the decision to take off his mounts Friday, but is expected to keep his 11 mounts on Saturday.
