Retired Horseman Newton Mayo Dead

Retired horseman and artist Newton Mayo died April 25 in Richmond,Va., with his wife of 72 years, Mary, at his side. He was 92.

Mayo pursued hunting, showing, racing, and training. He raced and trained horses at such tracks as Pimlico and Delaware Park, and sent out stakes winners Night Retreat, Glamor Role, and Bellothfleet in the 1960s. In his native Virginia, he broke yearlings at Christopher Chenery's The Meadow and managed John and Hazel Marsh's Marsh Thoroughbred Farm.

Following his retirement from Marsh Thoroughbred Farm in 1976,
Mayo returned to painting after a lengthy absence. He was honored twice at the White House and did portraits of Ronald and Nancy Reagan's horses. He also painted a series of silks for the Virginia Thoroughbred Association.

Mayo also is survived by two sons, equine veterinarian John Mayo, and Robert Mayo, an art dealer.
