Champali Out of Preakness

A case of colic has knocked Champali out of Saturday's Preakness Stakes (gr. I). Lloyd Madison Farms, IV's son of Glitterman was to ship to Pimlico in Baltimore from his base at Churchill Downs Wednesday morning.

The connections of Champali alerted Pimlico's stakes coordinator David Rollinson of the situation early Wednesday morning.

Trained by Greg Foley, Champali was being pointed to the Preakness off a runner-up effort to Midas Eyes in the Derby Trial Stakes (gr. III) on April 26. The four-time stakes winner was bred in Kentucky by McKee Stables. He is out of the Dixieland Band mare Radioactivity.

A winner of six of nine starts, Champali has earned $333,954. A winner of the Iroquois Stakes (gr. III) at 2 at Churchill Downs last year, Champali won three stakes in a row earlier this year at Turfway Park: The Turfway Park Prevue Stakes, the WEBN Stakes, and the John Battaglia Memorial Stakes. He then ran third behind New York Hero and Eugene's Third Son in the Lane's End Stakes (gr. II) on March 22.

According to a May 14 Churchill Downs release, Champali was improving after receiving treatment the evening of May 13. The colt was up and around and grazing outside his barn at the Louisville oval.

"It's better that it happened here than up there (at Pimlico)" said Foley. "We treated him and he'd get a little better, but he had about three cases of it yesterday."
