A Gentlemen filly brought $135,000 Monday to top the first session of the Barretts May sale of 2-year-olds in training in California. The Chaiken Family Trust and Fred Sahadi purchased her for $135,000 from Sequel Bloodstock, agent. The filly's dam, stakes-placed Queen of Fairway (by It's Freezing), is a half-sister to grade II winner Thirst for Peace (by Time for a Change). The filly worked a quarter mile in :21.7 prior to the auction.
In all, 113 horses were sold for a gross of $2,721,100, an average of $24,081, and a median of $14,000. All the numbers were down compared to a year ago when 117 horses were sold for a gross of $3,485,000, an average of $29,786, and a median of $18,000. (The 2002 figures do not include the results for 18 horses of racing age that sold.)
