The equine abortion rate in Kentucky continued its downward trend, based on figures released Monday by the University of Kentucky's Livestock Disease Diagnostic Center (LDDC) in Lexington. Through the first week of May, the LDDC had received 406 aborted fetuses for evaluation compared to 697 in 2002. For the first week of May alone, the number was only 12 this year compared to 93 last year.

The University of Kentucky and LDDC are tracking and releasing abortion figures because of concerns about mare reproductive loss syndrome (MRLS).
