Jockey Patrick Husbands won Sunday's $182,950 George C. Hendrie Stakes (Can-III) at Woodbine aboard El Prado Essence, a horse that carries special significance for him on Mother's Day.
The last time Husbands rode El Prado Essence to victory in a stakes event was on Sept. 2, 2001, when he guided the chestnut to a win in the Seaway Stakes. That same day, Husbands sadly learned that his mother had passed away.
A year and a half later, the four-time Sovereign Award winner once again mounted El Prado Essence on Sunday, in search of the same result for a fitting Mother's Day tribute. The rider and his 6-year-old recruit certainly did not isappoint, winning Woodbine's Hendrie Stakes.
"Today is a special day for my Mom," said Husbands. "Everybody is enjoying Mother's Day and I lost my mother on the same day I rode this horse. I want to say, 'Mom, I wish you all the best up there, and we're down here thinking about you."
Riding for owner/trainer Audre Cappuccitti, Husbands remained calm in the irons throughout the 6 1/2-furlong race. Waiting behind horses through fast wind-assisted fractions of :21.65, :43.95 and 1:08.98 , Husbands angled El Prado Essence to the middle of the track in early stretch, and never looked back, capturing the lead and drawing away to win by four lengths.
"She ran a very good race," said Husbands. "The race unfolded the way I hoped it would, sitting back and waiting for the speed to die. I tried to get a clear path and she ran a big race. She's a nice filly."
The final time of the race was 1:15.66 over a main track rated fast.
In victory, El Prado Essence returned $8.60, $4.10, $3.40 combining with Leading Role ($17.30, $10.40) for a $123.80 exacta. Brass In Pocket ($4.10) completed the $481.00 trifecta.
