Live racing returns to Turfway Park on Nov. 25 for a 27-day Holiday meet highlighted by six stakes, including the $55,000 Magic City Classic for Alabama-breds on opening day.
The five other Turfway stakes will be on Saturdays and will offer purses of $50,000. The list of stakes includes the Holiday Inaugural Stakes for fillies and mares on Dec. 1, 3 year-olds and up, at six furlongs; the My Charmer Stakes for fillies and mares on Dec. 8, 3-year-olds and up, at 1 1/16 miles; the Prairie Bayou Stakes for 3-year-olds and up contested over 1 1/8 miles on Dec. 15; the Dec. 22 Gowell Stakes for 2-year-old fillies at six furlongs; and the Holiday Cheer Stakes on Dec. 29 for 3-year-olds and up at six furlongs.
While Alabama has not offered live racing since the mid-1990s at Birmingham Race Course, off-track wagering in the state provides purses for a few state-bred races now are hosted at other tracks. The Magic City Classic is the first such race to be run at Turfway.
With the exception of the week after Christmas, racing begins at 5:30 p.m. EST Wednesday through Friday, and at 1:10 p.m.Saturday and Sunday.
The holiday meet ends Dec. 31, but racing continues uninterrupted with the start of the winter/spring meet Jan. 1, 2008.
During the holiday meet, admission and parking are free every day. Gates open at 11:15 a.m.
