Nine Sophomores Try Ascot at Bay Meadows

A field of nine has been entered for Saturday's $100,000 Ascot Handicap for 3-year-olds on the turf at Bay Meadows.

Just Wonder, assigned top weight of 117 and ridden by Russell Baze, finished fifth in the $150,000 La Puente Stakes at Santa Anita on April 12 but was only beaten 2 1/4 lengths by the winner, Steelaninch, in the one-mile turf race. Trained by Laura de Seroux, Just Wonder has two wins and a second in five career races.

Helms Deep, from the Carla Gaines barn, most recently finished fourth in the $81,100 Academy Road Stakes at Santa Anita on March 14. The runner-up in Academy Road was Steelaninch, who was 1 1/2 length clear of Helms Deep.
