Trained by Richard Dutrow Jr. for Jay Em Ess Stables, the daughter of Malibu Moon defeated males in her most recent start, the six-furlong New York Breeders' Futurity at Finger Lakes Oct. 6. By the Light settled into a stalking position as Swifty Victress and Miss Missile dueled quickly on the front end through fractions of :22 1/5 and :46 3/5. Swifty Victress backed up soon after that as Dixie Duces and Champagne Eyes -- who made a strong middle move for Patrick Valenzuela -- took up the challenge as they completed six furlongs in :46 3/5. Always in position, By the Light moved into contention quickly for Bejarano and swept past without a danger.
Paul Rothfuss bred By the Light, who is out of the Major Impact mare Dixie Tempo and sold for $190,000 as a yearling. A late betting move made her the slight favorite over Sky Mom. She paid $6.20, $4.40 and $3.20.
The victory, worth $180,000, increased the bay filly's earnings to $451,815.
Miss Missile, ridden by Justin Shepherd, fought gamely in the lane along the inside, but she could not hold off the winner. Miss Missile, coming off a 10 3/4-length win at Delta Downs in the seven-furlong My Trusty Cat, returned $9.40 and $5.
Lady On Holiday, facing winners for the first time, rallied for third with Robby Albarado aboard. She paid $3.20.
