St. John's University head basketball coach Mike Jarvis has been elected to the Board of Trustees of The New York Racing Association.

"We are extremely pleased to add Mike's expertise and energy to our Board," said NYRA chairman Barry Schwartz. "His background and experience are outstanding. He is highly accomplished and he is active in the community. To top it off, he has a passion for the sport of Thoroughbred racing."

Among his many honors, Jarvis was named national coach of the year by the Black Coaches Association in 1998 and has been inducted into both the Massachusetts High School Hall of Fame and the Cambridge Ridge and Latin High School Hall of Fame.

Off the court, in 1999 he established the St. John's University ADVOCATES to better prepare players for life after basketball. In 1990, he established the George Washington University Advisory Board and in 1986 co founded the "Skills for Life" program. The ADVOCATES program will hold a fundraiser at Belmont Park on May 16th.
