The Brazilian jockey Jorge Ricardo rode his 10,000th winner Jan. 9 at Hipodromo San Isidro in Buenos Aires, becoming the first jockey in history to do so.
Ricardo, 46, has been neck-and-neck with top North American jockey Russel Baze for more than a year, and only recently drew ahead of Baze for number of victories. Baze, a Hall of Fame member based in California, trails his South American contender by 27 wins.
The 10,000th win marked a personal achievement for Ricardo, who purposefully moved his tack to Buenos Aires in June of 2006 in pursuit of the world record. A winner of 26 consecutive riding titles in Rio de Janeiro, he scored 450 wins last year in Argentina and led that nation as much the best.
He is the winner of more than 120 grade I races.
