Xtra Heat Going to Gone West
Champion Xtra Heat has been booked to Gone West and will be bred Saturday, said John Freston, racing manager for David Plummer and partners ClassicStar Farm.Freston said Gone West was chosen because, "we are a fan of the horse, and obviously the foal should be very fast and quite precocious."Gone West stands for $125,000 at Dr. John and Alice Chandler's Mill Ridge Farm near Lexington. Freston said Xtra Heat has adjusted well to life on the farm. "She has received a lot of attention. We have people, not just horse people, but people from around Lexington just driving out the farm because they have read in the paper she is here and they want to see her. She is getting her picture taken a lot."Xtra Heat was taken out of training in mid-April and arrived at her owner's farm near Versailles, Ky., on April 18. At that time, a decision was made if she fails to get in foal, then she could return to trainer John Salzman Sr.'s Laurel Park barn. Xtra Heat left the track with lifetime record of 26-5-2 from 35 starts. The 5-year-old daughter of Dixieland Heat earned $2,389,635. Xtra Heat established a new record for most stakes wins by a filly or mare, recording her 25th win in added-money company, with her 1 3/4-length victory in the Feb. 22 Barbara Fritchie Handicap (gr. II) at Laurel Park. Three-time champion Susan's Girl held the previous record of 24.
