Saint Ballado Colt Brings $750,000 at Fasig-Tipton

Agent Buzz Chace purchased a Saint Ballado colt for $750,000 to top Tuesday's second and final session of the Fasig-Tipton Kentucky fall yearling sale. Consigned by Claire and Billy Murphy's Rockwell Sales Agency, the colt was produced from the Metrogrand mare Metromane and is a full brother to Breeders' Cup Juvenile contender Flame Thrower, winner of the Norfolk Stakes and Del Mar Futurity. Chace purchased the colt on behalf of Ernie Paragallo.

FTK reported 502 horses were sold for a total of $6,768,300 and an average of $13,483 during the sale. A year ago, 431 yearlings brought a gross of $5,724,800 for an average of $13,283.

At Tattersalls Park Paddocks in Newmarket, England, the average price of 17,905 guineas paid during the second day of the Autumn Horses in Training Sale represented a 1% gain over guineas on last year's corresponding session. The median price rose 14% to 10,250 guineas.

The day's top price of 220,000 guineas was paid by Charlie Gordon-Watson for Takwinan, an Alzao colt who is due to continue his racing career in Saudi Arabia for his new owner, Prince Faisal bin Khaled. Underbidder was Bernard Cullinane, who was on the telephone with California trainer Bobby Frankel.

The price of 220,000 guineas is the second highest ever paid at the Tattersalls Horses In Training sale, headed only by the 225,000 guineas paid in 1997 for Chief Contender.
