Lawyer Ron, already a stakes winner at 2 and a winner of five straight at 3 (including three graded events), earned honors as Champion Older Horse at 4, primarily off sensational wins in the Whitney Handicap (gr. I) and Woodward Stakes (gr. I) at Saratoga. Lawyer Ron is by Danzig’s sprint Champion Langfuhr — now an extremely consistent sire of stakes winners — and in direct female line goes back to the great tap-root mare Uvira II, ancestress of A.P. Indy, Summer Squall, Lemon Drop Kid, Polish Numbers and Raja Baba.
The Danzig sire line has been extremely good with Mr. Prospector, and Langfuhr has several good winners on the cross, including Champion Wando. Danzig line sires have also done well with the Raise a Native line through Alydar — a cross that has produced more than 30 stakes winners — and Exclusive Native (particularly through Affirmed). Another cross that has frequently done well for Danzig is that with Ribot line mares. Langfuhr is sire of a grade I winner by Hoist the Flag (by Ribot’s son, Tom Rolfe) and also has stakes winners from the His Majesty branch of this line. Langfuhr has enjoyed considerable success with mares descending from several different branches of the Bold Ruler sire line, Seattle Slew among them. Lawyer Ron himself is an example of the very successful cross of Danzig over mares descending from Turn-to. Turn-to has been a very good target for inbreeding, and crossing Lawyer Ron back over Turn-to line mares should work well (especially as his dam also carries Ambiorix, a half-sister to the dam of Turn-to). — by Alan Porter
