The one-mile open money event, 10th on an 11-race card, has drawn five other ambitious 3-year-olds but figures to be an easy assignment for the unbeaten War Pass. Assigned morning-line odds of 2-5, he will break from post five under regular rider Cornelio Velasquez.
War Pass, by Cherokee Run out of the Mr. Prospector mare Vue, is unbeaten in four starts and is considered one of the leading contenders for the May 3 Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (gr. I). Bred in Kentucky by Seth Hancock’s Cherry Valley Farm, the colt was a $180,000 Keeneland September yearling sale purchase.
War Pass’s connections will also send out Web Gem, a Fusaichi Pegasus colt who ran fourth Jan. 30 in an allowance event at Gulfstream last time out. A $600,000 RNA from Fasig-Tipton’s select Florida sale of 2-year-olds in training, Web Gem has only one win under his belt – an Oct. 25 maiden special weight going a mile at Aqueduct.
Other runners include the Michael Petro-trained Jet Run, who has not won a race since August of 2007, the lightly-raced Chadwell (whose only other start beside a maiden win was an eighth-place finish in a Jan. 24 allowance), Ultimate Authority, whose last win for trainer Angel Salinas came in September of 2007, and the Donald Pittman-trained Dylan’s Choice – the 10-length winner of a 1 1/16-mile maiden claiming event at Tampa Bay Downs Jan. 26 .
