Continental Red, The Tin Man Drill for Murray 'Cap

(from track notes)
Continental Red worked six furlongs in 1:13 on the main track at Hollywood Park Friday in preparation for the $400,000 Jim Murray Memorial Handicap at 1 1/2 miles on turf May 10.

"He worked easy and galloped out seven furlongs in 1:25 3/5 and a mile in 1:41," said trainer Ian Jory. The 7-year-old California-bred gelding drilled under exercise rider Tiffany Butcher.

Continental Red, with $844,853 in earnings, seeks millionaire status with a victory in the Jim Murray. His most significant victory was in the San Luis Rey Stakes (gr. IIT) on the Santa Anita turf in March of last year.

The Tin Man, who figures to dictate the pace as one of the favorites in the Murray, continued to work smartly on the main track at Santa Anita. He covered seven furlongs in a bullet 1:25.20 for trainer Richard Mandella, five days after working a mile in 1:38 there. Regular rider Mike Smith has the call.

The Tin Man, a 5-year-old gelding with earnings of $783,620, also would become a millionaire with the $240,000 first prize. A grade I winner last year, The Tin Man comes off a nine-length victory in the San Luis Obispo Handicap (gr. IIT) on a yielding Santa Anita course on Feb. 15.

Perhaps the most intriguing entrant for the Jim Murray will be Mutakarrim, a 6-year-old horse who finished second in a two-mile steeplechase in Ireland April 21. Trainer Dermot Weld has the English- to be flown here Monday, according to Dan Eidson, assistant racing secretary and stakes coordinator.

Trainer Neil Drysdale named Gary Stevens to ride Storming Home, a 5-year-old English import primed for his United States debut. The Gainsborough Farm standard bearer won the Group I Emirates Airline Champion Stakes at Newmarket in October, defeating Moon Ballad and Noverre.

Other probable starters include Canadian International Championship Stakes winner Ballingarry, Murano and either Denon or Chiselling from the Bobby Frankel stable.

Night Life, another Jim Murray nominee, worked six furlongs at Santa Anita in 1:14.40 for trainer Kristin Mulhall.

Weights will be issued Sunday.
