Buffythecenterfold Stands Out in Railbird

(from track report)
Buffythecenterfold, a three-time stakes winner, looms as a solid favorite in the $100,000-added Railbird Stakes (gr. III) for 3-year-old fillies at seven furlongs Sunday at Hollywood Park.

"She worked five furlongs in fifty-eight and four (fifths) yesterday," said trainer Mel Stute Thursday from Santa Anita. "She will come over tomorrow."

A field of six was entered.

Stute last won the Railbird in 1987 with Very Subtle.

Buffythecenterfold, a Kentucky-bred daughter of Capote, has won four of seven starts and earned $269,815. After breaking her maiden at Hollywood at first asking last summer, Buffythecenterfold came back to win the Landaluce Stakes (gr. III) and traveled to Del Mar to capture the Sorrento Stakes (gr. II). She opened her sophomore campaign March 23 with a victory in the Santa Paula Stakes at Santa Anita.

Gary Stute, Mel's son and assistant at Hollywood Park, said that Buffy Tyler, the Playboy magazine centerfold after whom co-owner Allen Brian named the filly, was an expected guest.

"Allen said that Buffy and four of her friends are coming," said Stute of the aspiring actress who saw her namesake run for the first time in the Sorrento last year.

Buffythecenterfold will be coupled as an entry with late-running Dash For Money from the Bobby Frankel stable. Frank Stronach owns homebred Dash For Money and purchased a majority interest in Buffythecenterfold from Brian. Victor Espinoza will ride Buffythecenterfold while Alex Solis has the call on Dash For Money.
