Bob and Beverly Lewis' Senor Swinger rolled to a 2 ½ length victory in the Crown Royal American Turf Stakes (gr. IIIT) in the race just prior to the Kentucky Oaks (gr. I). Trainer Bob Baffert opted not to run Senor Swinger in tomorrow's Kentucky Derby (gr. I) and the conditioner was rewarded in the $100,000-added race for 3-year-olds.

Making his first start on the turf, Senor Swinger returned $8.20, $4.20, and $3.20 in the 1 1/16-mile race. Finishing second was Claiborne Farm's Remind, the post time favorite. Foufa's Warrior finished third in a photo over Rapid Proof. Remind paid $3.60 and $3. Foufa's Warrior paid $4.80 to show. The 3-6 exacta returned $26.

Senor Swinger came from off the pace under Pat Day, getting the distance in 1:41.38.

Lx Commander set the early fractions of :23.31 and :46.95 while being pressed by Remind with Rapid Proof tracking while wide in third position. Imitation made a move up the hedge as they headed into the far turn, but was trapped behind Lx Commander. After six furlongs in 1:10.50, Senor Swinger, still several lengths behind the leaders, began to pick up horses while wide. Once the field straightened away for home, Senor Swinger unleashed a powerful stretch kick and drove clear down the center of the lane for his first stakes victory.

Senor Swinger was bred in Kentucky by Bob Ackerman. The grey/roan colt is by El Prado, last year's leading sire by earnings, and is out of the Kris S. mare Smooth Swinger. Senor Swinger was coming off a fifth-place finish in the Wood Memorial (gr. I) behind Empire Maker in his first start for the Lewises and Baffert after being purchased privately.

There were several scratches in the race: White Cat, Ontario, and the also-eligibles Color Me Gone, Rahy Vision, and Moonshine Hall.
